Our backyard is one of the world's greatest playgrounds in the world, but to keep it that way, it needs our help.
Garbage is becoming a huge problem – littering beaches and oceans around the world, including the beaches in our own backyard. It's a problem created by humans, but its impacts extend far beyond us, wreaking havoc on wildlife and our eco-system.
As a community, we want to take care of and protect the spaces that we play in, so this Friday, in celebration of World Ocean Day, we are rallying the community and getting out to protect where we play – rain or shine.
This is going to be about putting our money where our mouth is, setting an example for the rest of the community, and leaving these spaces better than we found them.
If you're in to get out there and help out, get signed up below.
What: Beach clean-up at Kits Beach (we'll be running it along side Surf Rider Vancouver's activiation)
When: June 8th – 6AM to 8AM
Where: We will be meeting at the Boathouse on Kits Beach at 6AM and working our way north up the beach.
- Dress for the weather – this is happening rain or shine.
- Gloves – keep those hands clean.
- Garbage bags or buckets – for collecting all that trash.
- Garbage grabbers (or kitchen tongs) – for picking up the trash.
- Rakes / shovels – not necessary, but good if you got them. Believe it or not 60% - 70% of the plastic on a beach is buried.
- Snacks & coffee – duh.
For safety reasons please bring gloves and closed toed shoes. Always use a stick or trash picker to sift through the sand to avoid sharp objects. If you come across any sharp or hazardous object, mark it and tell the organizers and they will handle the safe removal.
